A lawyer for Johnson & Johnson stated that the company will continue to defend the safety of its baby powder products in upcoming trials this fall, despite two multimillion dollar verdicts against the company so far this year. The company has also said it plans to appeal the verdicts.

Talcum Powder Trials

The first talcum powder ovarian cancer trial this year reached a verdict in February and awarded $72 million to the family of a woman who developed ovarian cancer from talcum powder use. In early May, another jury in Missouri awarded $55 million to a woman who was forced to undergo a hysterectomy to battle her ovarian cancer after the use of talc on her private areas.

This year’s trials highlighted studies dating as far back as 1971 that show a definitive link between talcum powder used in baby powder products and ovarian cancer. A 1982 New York Times article even suggested that Johnson & Johnson knew about the link. However, it wasn’t until 1999 that the American Cancer Society advised women not to use the product on their groin areas.

Upcoming Trials

With mounting evidence, it’s surprising to see J&J continue to defend the safety of its talcum powder products, particularly after two separate juries found the that its products cause cancer. The medical industry giant will try again to defeat an ovarian cancer victim in September in a Missouri trial.

Soon, J&J may be held responsible for its negligence toward thousands of women in the near future. Over 1,200 lawsuits are currently pending against the company, and thousands more potential claims are being reviewed across the country. If you used Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products and developed ovarian cancer, you need an attorney with a track record of holding negligent companies responsible.
